Zhihu Marketing for Foreign Brands in China

Zhihu holds 993 million pieces of content from 81.5 million creators, and its answers are what Chinese search engines and AI assistants quote. This guide explains what Zhihu marketing is for, which formats a foreign brand can buy, and why most overseas brands cannot open an advertising account themselves.

Zhihu is China's decision-support library, not a social network

Zhihu marketing is the practice of placing brand answers, articles and promoted content inside China's largest question-and-answer community, so that a brand is present at the moment a buyer researches a category rather than at the moment a feed is scrolled. The "China's Quora" label undersells what it has become: as of 30 June 2026 Zhihu carried roughly 993 million pieces of content from 81.5 million creators (Zhihu Q2 2026 results) — a library large enough that Chinese search engines and AI assistants treat it as a reference for how things work in China.

The mechanics matter more than the size. Zhihu users arrive through a question or a search, not a feed, and a strong answer keeps ranking for years, not 48 hours. Effort compounds here; the platform rewards explanation over reach.

The audience is also narrower than the "social platform" framing implies: as of 30 June 2026, about 51.5% of active users were under 30 and about 46.8% were women (H1 2026 interim report), and Zhihu reported that daily active users spend more than 41 minutes a day in the app (Q4 2025 results, March 2026). People read on Zhihu; they do not flick past it.

Why Zhihu matters more in the AI era, not less

An AI citation source is a corpus that large language models and AI search products retrieve answers from, and Zhihu has spent two years positioning itself as one. Its own AI search product, Zhihu ZhiDa (知乎直答), launched in June 2024 and grew from million-scale to ten-million-scale monthly users within a year, adding a professional search mode over licensed literature databases covering more than 50 million Chinese and English documents (reported March 2026). The stated priority for 2026 is to accelerate AI-related commercialisation and raise Zhihu's position in the wider AI ecosystem.

The content mix is moving the same direction: AI-related professional content grew about 37% year on year in Q2 2026, and Zhihu's expert data solutions — licensing content to model developers — completed a first commercial validation across several model capability areas. Read that as a signal about whose voice becomes the default: when a Chinese buyer asks an AI assistant about your category, the answer is often assembled from Zhihu answers written by someone else. Absence is not neutral.

What a foreign brand can actually buy on Zhihu

Zhihu marketing formats fall into two families — organic presence through a verified organisation account (机构号), and paid distribution through 知+ (Zhi+), the platform's native content-promotion product. Every paid format attaches to an answer, an article or a question, never to a display banner.

FormatWhat it isTypical jobHow it is bought
Organisation account (机构号)The verified brand presence on Zhihu; free to open, and the foundation everything else points atBuilding the category authority that answers, articles and a brand page accumulate over yearsThrough an agency if the brand holds no mainland licence; profile and licence review
知+ Self-select (自选)Brands post a brief, creators write original answers embedding a conversion component — external link, mini-program or product cardStarting from zero without an in-house content team; multiple voices and angles quicklyPaid per click on the conversion component
知+ Mutual-select (互选)Commercial modification of, or insertion into, an existing high-performing answer or articleBorrowing the credibility of a question that already ranksNegotiated with the creator through the platform
知+ Tasks (任务: invited and recruited)Bespoke answers, articles or videos to brief; or mass recruitment of mid-tier creators for scaleLaunch seeding and a visible wave of third-party contentTask-based, priced per creator or per deliverable
知+ Boost (助推)Pushing content that has already performed into the home feed and the "next answer" slotsCompounding proven content rather than gambling on new creativeTargeted by interest, age, city and device; CPC or CPM

Zhihu publishes no rate card, so every figure quoted is a broker number. Published agency quotes for 2026 put the minimum prepayment at RMB 5,000–10,000, listed click prices from RMB 0.35 with realised prices nearer RMB 2–2.5, a recommended daily budget from RMB 500, and an agency service fee typically 5–8% of the amount loaded. Treat all of it as directional.

The platform's own revenue is more telling. Marketing services revenue was RMB 199.0 million in Q2 2026, down from RMB 222.8 million a year earlier — a decline Zhihu attributes to its own "proactive and ongoing refinement of service offerings" rather than to falling advertiser demand. The platform is curating its feed inventory and steering demand towards content it considers worth ranking.

Why most overseas brands cannot open a Zhihu account themselves

A Zhihu organisation account is the verified brand identity that unlocks publishing, analytics and paid distribution, and the eligibility rules published by authorised agencies are built on mainland credentials: a mainland enterprise business licence or individual-business licence, the legal representative's identity document, a corporate bank account, and an ICP filing for any campaign landing page (agency eligibility checklist). Individual accounts are not accepted, and Zhihu does not sell advertising directly — accounts are opened and serviced through certified agencies.

One wrinkle matters for anyone using a Hong Kong holding structure: at least one authorised agency's eligibility table also lists Hong Kong companies, admitted on a Business Registration Certificate issued by the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department. That is agency documentation, not a platform rule, so confirm it in writing — but for a brand already importing through a Hong Kong entity it is the cheapest test of whether a mainland company is really needed.

A foreign brand without a mainland entity has one practical route: an agency that contracts as advertiser under its own licence. It is faster than incorporating, but the account, the followers and the data belong to the agency, and the brand still carries the labelling and liability for what the content says.

The labelling and disclosure rules that govern Zhihu content

Zhihu content compliance is the set of labelling, sourcing and disclosure rules that apply to anything a brand publishes or pays for. Four carry most of the risk.

Under SAMR Order No. 72, in force since 1 May 2023, content that shares knowledge, experience or product testing and carries a shopping link must be conspicuously marked 广告 — advertising (SAMR, 2023). That is the shape of a 知+ answer with a product card, and the penalty runs through Article 59 of the Advertising Law to a fine of up to RMB 100,000.

Second, the Advertising Law requires any figure cited in advertising to state its source and validity period (Advertising Law, 2021 amendment) — a rule that bites on a platform built on statistics.

Third, AI-generated content must be labelled. The Measures for the Labelling of AI-Generated Synthetic Content, issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China with the MIIT, the Ministry of Public Security and the NRTA, took effect on 1 September 2025: AI-generated text, images, audio and video need both a visible label and metadata-level marking, and removing or altering them is banned (CAC, 2025). Zhihu has moved the same way: its H1 2026 interim report says it strengthened AI-generated content disclosure and identification and reinforced creators' responsibility for accuracy, while governing low-quality AI content that lacks factual basis. An agency producing thirty answers a month from a model, with no disclosure, is manufacturing a liability.

Fourth, engagement cannot be bought. CAC Order No. 5 bans traffic fraud, fake registration and account manipulation (CAC Order No. 5, 2020), which covers purchased upvotes. Paid promotion through 知+ is legitimate because the platform labels it; purchased organic support is a different product.

When Zhihu should be your lead China channel

A lead China channel is the platform a brand commits its first 6 to 12 months of content to, and Zhihu earns that role in high-consideration categories where buyers research before they spend: B2B and industrial supply, enterprise software, education, financial products, medical aesthetics and premium durables. There, Zhihu answers rank in Baidu, feed AI answers, and keep working for years.

It is the wrong lead channel where demand is impulse-led or visual. Beauty, fashion, food and household goods are decided on Xiaohongshu and transaction trends on Douyin; there, Zhihu's job is defensive — owning the answer to "is it worth it" and "is it safe" before a competitor or an anonymous account does.

A 90-day Zhihu sequence for a brand with no China team

A Zhihu sequence is a staged entry plan: map the questions in month one, build the answering machinery in month two, and amplify only what has already earned organic traction in month three.

Month one is research. Export the questions Chinese buyers actually ask — category basics, comparisons, price expectations, safety and after-sales complaints — and record who owns each one today. In most categories the top answers belong to competitors, distributors, or a personal account that has quietly become the category authority.

Month two is structure. Open an organisation account through an agency if you hold no mainland licence, publish 10 to 15 useful answers under the brand's name, and settle the disclosure question: whether content is AI-assisted, who approves claims, and how data is sourced. Answers that sell lose; answers that explain win the ranking.

Month three is amplification, and only of content that already performs. Put 知+ behind the two or three answers earning organic upvotes, target by interest and city rather than broad reach, and keep the landing page ICP-filed.

How to measure Zhihu honestly

Zhihu measurement is the practice of judging the channel on demand-side evidence — brand-term search volume, answer ranking persistence, share of AI answers and lead quality — rather than on views. Track how your answers rank month over month, whether your brand appears in the top three answers for your five most important category questions, cost per qualified lead, and whether conversations open with "I read your answer on Zhihu".

Two traps are worth naming: views are driven by question traffic, so one popular question can deliver six figures of impressions with no commercial intent; and because rankings take weeks to move, a 30-day evaluation always reports failure. Judge it over two quarters, on leads rather than reach.

FAQ

Should a foreign brand be on Zhihu? Yes, if your category is researched rather than impulse-bought. Zhihu answers rank in Baidu, feed Chinese AI assistants, and stay useful for years, so the platform compounds where feed advertising decays. B2B, industrial, education, financial, medical-aesthetic and premium durable brands should treat it as a core channel; beauty, fashion and food brands usually lead on Xiaohongshu and use Zhihu defensively, to own the sceptical questions about their category.

Can a foreign company open a Zhihu advertising account without a Chinese entity? Not directly. Zhihu does not sell advertising itself — accounts are opened through certified agencies — and the eligibility list is built on mainland credentials: a mainland enterprise or individual-business licence, a legal representative's ID, a corporate bank account, and an ICP filing for the landing page. Brands without a mainland entity work through an agency that contracts as advertiser, which is faster but leaves the account, the followers and the data with the agency.

How much does Zhihu advertising cost? Zhihu publishes no rate card, so every figure is an agency quote. The cheapest entry is not media — it is the answers you publish for free.

How is Zhihu different from Quora for a brand? Zhihu is a larger relative to its market, it is indexed by Baidu, and it is one of the corpora Chinese AI products retrieve from, so a ranking answer keeps working outside the platform. Its audience is also younger and more female than the Quora stereotype suggests: 51.5% of active users were under 30 and about 46.8% were women as of June 2026, with daily active users spending more than 41 minutes a day in the app.

Does AI-generated content need a label on Zhihu? Yes. China's labelling measures for AI-generated synthetic content took effect on 1 September 2025 and require both a visible label and metadata-level marking on AI-generated text, images, audio and video, with a ban on removing them. Zhihu has tightened its own mechanisms too: its H1 2026 interim report says it strengthened AI-generated content disclosure and identification and reinforced creators' responsibility for accuracy, while governing low-quality AI content that lacks factual basis.
